Solutions to floods and traffic in Marikina, Antipolo and Cainta?

Writing about the improved drainage systems along Marcos Highway and A. Tuazon in the cities of Marikina, Antipol and Pasig and the Municipality of Cainta, I was hopeful (along with a lot of other people living in these areas) that the completed projects would be able to handle heavy rains such as those experienced during the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy (International name: Ketsana) in 2009. It turns out a lot of people’s hopes sank in the floods that have ravaged the areas again and many other parts of Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces this last several days.

Is there a solution to the problem? I would like to think that there is an engineering solution. I cite as an example Malaysia’s experience, particularly in Kuala Lumpur that has also experienced a lot of flooding in the past. To address severe flooding brought about by , they constructed the Storm Management and Road Tunnel orย SMART Tunnelย . Details for this infrastructure are posted in their website and it does not take a genius to understand what it would take for the Philippines to solve similar problems in its national capital region. [Of course, it helped that the tunnel is also used for traffic!] Too much investment is already established in these cities and it is not an easier task to move people from the affected areas compared with what it would take to build something like the SMART. Sige nga, kaya bang palipatin ang lahat ng tao sa Marikina, QC, Pasig, lower Antipolo and Cainta sa ibang lugar?ย 

Singapore also did major drainage works in that city state along with its subway development. They recognized early on that they had a serious problem and it required sacrifices that are now paying off in terms of them also experiencing heavy rains from the monsoon and yet have minimal or no severe flooding problems like what we have. Such projects are long overdue here and should be the flagship project of any administration who would want to come up with something that they will be remembered for by generations to come – and with smiles on their faces.

    I always read your posts, especially those related to Cainta. The SM Hypermart in Cainta just opened today. Traffic on the road going to Junction was very heavy, stretching even past Buenas Market (where I take a uturn to Karangalan Village). On the way home just now (11PM), it was still heavy from the Phoenix gas station until SM. Along with the potted holes in front of SM (probably created by the large construction equipment building the SM facade/building), jeepneys take their time waiting for passengers, thereby decreasing the effective lane of the 2-way Imelda Avenue to one. Hope that this wouldn’t be an everyday happening, but ff you happen to pass by the area, please make a commentary on the situation. Thanks and more power!

      Thanks for the comment. I frequently pass that area because my parents’ home is in one of the villages along Imelda Avenue. Traffic along Imelda has steadily worsened due to various factors including the increased through traffic as Imelda connects Marcos Highway and Ortigas Avenue, and the increasing number of residents along the stretch of Imelda. Sadly, the pavement is not well maintained (SM should be held responsible if its proven that their construction damaged the pavement) and there’s poor enforcement of traffic rules and regulations especially along critical portions like Vista Verde’s main gate and that SM Hypermart area. Commercial developments like SM’s are supposed to have conducted traffic impact studies complete with recommendations. I wonder whether there were studies done and what they recommended to mitigate impacts, particularly congestion brought about by the Hypermart.

      Not sure about those two. SM already had a Hypermarket along Felix/Imelda Ave. and a SaveMore in the town proper. Avida put up advertising near Ligaya but hasn’t listed any projects there yet. But among the 2 perhaps the Ayala project might be more realistic. They need a presence in the East as so far they have none.

    Hope you return your blog them to white background instead of black….. This black background is somewhat harsh to the eyes, so I don’t read the blog that often anymore ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Thank you.
